Program Details

This serene musical program presents the music of four Italian composers, all contemporaries of Michelangelo and his work. You will hear music of little-known female composers Maddalena Casulana, who composed madrigals for Michelangelo’s great-nephew, and Raffaella Aleotti, who was the first woman to publish a collection of sacred music. Framing the concert are movements of Palestrina’s Missa Papae Marcelli, one of the pillars of western classical music which debuted in the Sistine Chapel.  The program will conclude with Gregorio Allegri’s haunting Miserere mei, a secretive work only performed in the Sistine Chapel for centuries after its premiere.

Galleries will be open until 5:30pm and will reopen after the concert until 7:30pm.
